The first court hearing on the charges of Armita Abbasi
The court hearing examining the charges of Armita Abbasi was held on Sunday, January 29, 2023, at Branch one of the Revolutionary Court of Karaj.
According to social media reports, Armita Abbasi’s father wrote on his Instagram that the court session examining the charges of Armita Abbasi had convened on Sunday.
The detained protester Armita Abbasi was arrested in early October during nationwide protests. During her detention and before being transferred to Fardis Prison (Kachouii) in Karaj, she was severely tortured for a week and gang-raped many times.
Armita Abbasi’s name was leaked to social media for the first time when she was taken to Imam Ali Hospital in Karaj while shaking and bleeding. At first, the doctors and medical staff thought that she had cancer, but after the examination, it was found that she had been raped many times. Her head had been shaved, and she was bleeding from the rectum. She was terrified. The plainclothes agents accompanying her insisted that the doctors register the rape as something that happened before her arrest.
Before her family could reach the hospital, the security agents kidnapped and took her away.
Social media users reported that Armita had been arrested because of her posts in cyberspace.
Ms. Abbasi started a hunger strike along with 14 other detained protesters in Fardis Prison (Kachouii) of Karaj on January 2, 2023.
The lawyers of detained protester Armita Abbasi, Mohammad Esmailbeigi, and Sonia Mohammadi resigned on January 23, 2023, on the eve of the court hearing because they had been prevented from a face-to-face meeting with Armita.
In the court session on Sunday, January 29, 2023, at Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Karaj, Shahla Oroji participated as Armita Abbasi’s defense lawyer. So far, there is no information about the charges of Armita Abbasi.
