A 13-year-old girl called Parinaz committed suicide in east Tehran on Saturday, October 10, by throwing herself off a pedestrian bridge. Her friend explained to the police that Parinaz was fed up with her life and had expressed her frustration and intent to commit suicide just before the incident.
Her body hit the bus passing from under the bridge. Officials have admitted that depression and suicide are becoming more prevalent in Iran among young women and girls because of lack of opportunities for women and Iran ranks first in the Middle East in this regard.
