UNSR on VAW urged to investigate conditions of two exiled political prisoners

UNSR on VAW urged to investigate conditions of two exiled political prisoners

March 11, 2021
in Articles

The Secretariat of the National Council of Resistance of Iran issued a statement on March 10, 2021, reporting on the “Forcible exile of political prisoner Maryam Akbari Monfared to Semnan Prison.” The NCRI Secretariat urged the UN Human Rights High Commissioner for urgent action to secure the release of women political prisoners. It also cited Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the NCRI President-elect, as urging the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women to investigate the condition and health of Maryam Akbari and Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee.

The text of the state follows:

On Tuesday, March 10, 2021, the clerical regime has suddenly transferred political prisoner Maryam Akbari Monfared from Evin to Semnan Prison. She has been imprisoned for 12 years. To prevent Maryam Akbari’s forcible transfer, other women prisoners protested her transfer when they learned she was being taken away. But the ruthless prison guards forcibly and viciously dragged her out of her cell.

Akbari Monfared, whose three brothers and a sister were executed by the clerical regime, was arrested in December 2009 after the 2009 uprising and sentenced to 15 years in prison. During these years, she has not had a single day off for necessary medical treatment.

Alireza Akbari, a member of Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK/PMOI), was executed in 1981. Gholamreza Akbari, also a member of MEK, was murdered under torture in 1985. MEK members Abdulreza and Roghiyeh Akbari were executed during the 1988 massacre.

On January 24, 2021, political prisoner Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee was beaten and taken from Qarchak Prison in Varamin to Amol Prison (northern Iran).

On International Women’s Day, the Iranian Resistance strongly condemns the forcible exile of Maryam Akbari Monfared and Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee and urges the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and international human rights organizations to take immediate action to secure the immediate release of these two resilient women political prisoners.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), has repeatedly reiterated the need for an international delegation to visit the clerical regime’s prisons and meet with prisoners, especially political prisoners. Mrs. Rajavi urged the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women to investigate the health condition of Maryam Akbari and Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee.

ABOUT US

NCRI Women Committee

We work extensively with Iranian women outside the country and maintain a permanent contact with women inside Iran. The Women’s Committee is actively involved with many women’s rights organizations and NGO’s and the Iranian diaspora.
The committee is a major source of much of the information received from inside Iran with regards to women. Attending UN Human Rights Council meetings and other international or regional conferences on women’s issues and engaging in a relentless battle against the Iranian regime’s misogyny are part of the activities of members and associates of the committee.
