In a meeting Tuesday, December 15, with a group of professors and researchers from Slovania, on the status of women in Iran
, the head of the women’s faction of the Iranian regime’s parliament claimed that all countries are obliged to follow the UN Millennium Development document “because the issues therein are for better living.” In a contradictory remark, however, Fatemeh Rahbar added, “One of these issues is gender equality. Of course if the UN adopts a convention, we do not see ourselves obliged to implement it because we believe our religious teachings are much stronger.”
In another part of her remarks, Rahbar underlined, “Gender equality is a Western motto. We believe in gender equity. On women’s issues, Iran’s difference with other countries is that it acts based on Islamic laws but other countries act on UN instructions.”
