The state-run IRNA news agency issued a report referring to just a tip of the iceberg on poverty and women’s dire conditions in the Iranian capital:
“Begging by the poor has become an important social problem these days and the age of beggars has decreased.”
Statistics show that 25% of Tehran’s beggars are women. Poverty, unemployment, migration from villages to cities, low income jobs and running away from homes are the main elements behind increasing number of homeless people begging on streets. (State-run IRNA news agency – June 10, 2015)
