Anne Jemima Clough (20 January 1820 – 27 February 1892) was a trailblazing British educator and reformer who played a crucial role in transforming women’s access to higher education in the UK during the 19th century. Best known as the first principal of Newnham College, Cambridge, Clough was a powerful advocate for women’s academic advancement at a time when such ambition faced widespread resistance.
Born in Liverpool to a progressive family, Clough’s early life was shaped by financial hardship and a deep commitment to learning. Though largely self-taught, she quickly emerged as a leader in educational reform. Clough’s landmark achievement came in 1871 when she was appointed the first principal of Newnham Hall (later Newnham College), one of the first women’s colleges at the University of Cambridge.
