Historic testimonies at the gathering of 1,000 former political prisoners at Ashraf 3

Historic testimonies at the gathering of 1000 former political prisoners at Ashraf 3

November 14, 2021
in Women's News

A gathering of 1000 former political prisoners was held at Ashraf 3 in Albania on Sunday, November 14, 2021. They have witnessed the crimes of the clerical regime in the early 1980s and 1988.

Some 20 reporters and photographers visited Ashraf 3 on Sunday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., preparing reports from the museum of the victims of the 1988 massacre and the symbolic presentation of Khavaran cemetery. Some of the reporters attended the gathering of 1000 former political prisoners and interviewed the participants.

The gathering opened with the remarks by Ms. Massoumeh Malek Mohammadi, a former political prisoner and a Co-Secretary-General of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). She elaborated on the significance of the gathering.

“We have 1000 former PMOI political prisoners with us today in this gathering. Together, they have served thousands of years in the dungeons of the Shah and the mullahs. More than 200 of us are women. A group of us were witnesses of the 1988 massacre in various prisons. Some of the participants served from 10 to 17 years in prison. We have endured long years of torment to end the suffering of our people.”

In another part of her remarks, Ms. Malek Mohammadi added, “The (temporary) transfer of the Court of Sweden to Albania was an essential part of the fact-finding process. As the presiding judge reiterated, it is crucial in proving the guilt of the perpetrator who is on trial.”

Ms. Malek Mohammadi pointed out that the 1988 massacre does not belong to the past. It is an ongoing crime. The regime continues to torture and execute the PMOI members and supporters who stand their ground for the Iranian people’s freedom.

Only one woman survived from prisoners of five rooms

The first speaker was Ms. Parvin Firouzan with 9 years of imprisonment on her record. She attested, “One month after the beginning of the massacre, we saw that only one person had survived from among the prisoners of five closed-door rooms. They had executed all PMOI women.”

A six-year political prisoner, Ms. Mahin Latif also recounted her experiences in the clerical regime’s jails and memories of the resistance of PMOI women in the early 1980s. Her sister, Farzaneh, and brother Ali-Akbar Latif, were executed by the clerical regime.

Ms. Homa Jaberi, a survivor of the clerical regime’s vicious tortures of women, has experienced Evin, Gohardasht and Qezel-Hessar prisons for six years. She explained how PMOI women courageously resisted in the Residential Unit in Qezel-Hessar.

The women’s ward held 270 prisoners, only 70 survived

Mr. Hassan Zarif, a political prisoner for 12 years, said: “Only 60 survived from the 14 general wards in Evin Prison each holding 200 prisoners. The women’s ward held 270 prisoners, but only 70 of them survived.”

Dr. Khadijeh Ashtiani was in the clerical regime’s jails for five years. She explained how her brother, Mehdi, was arrested and executed in the 1988 massacre. Her sister, Maryam, was also arrested while on her way to join the PMOI and executed.

Dr. Ashtiani remembered some of the physicians and medical staff executed in the early 1980s or in 1988 for their sympathy with the PMOI/MEK.

Mr. Mohammad Raputam was also a political prisoner for 11 years. He said of the 154 prisoners transferred from Gohardasht to Evin, only 7 remained alive. The rest were executed during the 1988 massacre.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, also addressed the gathering. In her brief remarks, she said, “Your gathering today, which pays tribute to the November 2019 uprising carries a special message. Your message, the 1000 former political prisoners under the Shah and the mullahs, is that seeking justice for the victims of the 1988 massacre is the same as rising up for the mullahs’ overthrow. From the prisons’ death corridors to the streets of Tehran, Tabriz, Ahvaz, and Isfahan, the Mojahedin (PMOI/MEK) will never give up on this objective until Iran is liberated.”

The full testimonies of former political prisoners will be published in the following days.

Situation of 5 Detained Women: One Death Sentence, Two Lengthy Prison Terms, and Limbo

August 31, 2026
Situation of 5 Detained Women: Harsh Sentences and Limbo The ongoing arrests and heavy sentences remain a primary pillar of the suppression of women, aimed at controlling society during critical times and instilling fear to prevent another uprising. In this context, fresh reports on the situation of 5 detained women reveal details regarding the prolonged detention and heavy sentences handed down by the Revolutionary Court to Leila Abolhassani, Najmeh Amini, Zahra Mousavi, Madineh Shahnavazi, and Fatemeh Gholami Moghadam in the prisons of Isfahan, Mashhad, and Kerman. The Legal Case against Leila Abolhassani on Charges of "Moharebeh" Leila Abolhassani, a 43-year-old mother of two teenage girls who was arrested during the nationwide protests in January 2026 in Shahin Shahr, Isfahan, has been sentenced to death for “enmity against God” after authorities accused her of helping set fire to a supermarket. In April 2026, Branch 5 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Vahid Hemmat-Nejad, sentenced her to death on charges of "Moharebeh" (enmity against God). Her case is now before Supreme Court, and if her appeal fails, she could be executed. During the protests on January 8, 2026, Ms. Abolhassani was near a branch of the Ofogh Kourosh supermarket chain that was on fire and began filming the scene. Security forces subsequently arrested her and accused her of having participated in setting the store alight. Those close to the 43-year-old mother firmly reject this allegation, emphasizing that she was in no way involved in starting the fire and was merely filming the incident and the burning grocery store at the time of her arrest. She has been held in Dowlatabad Prison in Isfahan ever since, and no information has been released regarding furloughs or temporary release options. Najmeh Amini, Accounting Student, Sentenced to Over 12 Years in Prison Continuing this report on the situation of 5 detained women, Najmeh Amini, a 23-year-old accounting student, has been sentenced by Branch 1 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court to 12 years, six months, and one day in prison on charges of "operational action against national security." The 23-year-old student was violently arrested and beaten by security forces on February 2 during inspections in the Ferdowsi Bazaar area of Mashhad. Following her arrest, she was transferred to Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, where she spent approximately three months in solitary confinement within the security ward. Ms. Amini is currently detained in the so-called ‘Aramesh’ ward of Vakilabad Prison. She has been deprived of basic rights since her arrest, including access to a lawyer of her choice and a fair trial, and has faced intense pressure during interrogations aimed at extracting forced confessions. Details of Zahra Mousavi's Sentence: 6.5 Years Suspended and 4 Years Imprisonment Zahra Mousavi, another detainee from the January 2026 protests, is currently serving her sentence in Vakilabad Prison, Mashhad. She was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to six and a half years of suspended imprisonment alongside four years of enforceable imprisonment. An informed source stated regarding the legal case of Zahra Mousavi: "During the preliminary investigation stage, Ms. Mousavi faced multiple charges, including participating in protests, propaganda and incitement to commit crimes, forming a group, and acting against national security." Zahra Mousavi, 21, was born in Iran and holds dual Iranian-Afghan nationality. Originally from Fariman, Razavi Khorasan Province, she worked as a cashier at a restaurant in the municipality prior to her arrest. She was arrested on January 20, 2026, and subsequently transferred to the quarantine ward of Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad. Ongoing Prolonged Detention of Madineh Shahnavazi and Fatemeh Gholami Moghadam Another section of this report examining the situation of 5 detained women concerns the continued detention without trial of two women in the prisons of Kerman and Mashhad: • Madineh Shahnavazi's 28-Month Detention Without Trial: Madineh Shahnavazi, a Sunni Muslim woman, has been held without trial in Kerman Prison for over 28 months. She was arrested by security forces in the spring of 2024 and transferred to Kerman Prison. Now, after more than two years, her case remains in the preliminary stage at the prosecutor's office, and no court hearing has yet been held to examine her charges or case. • Fatemeh Gholami Moghadam's Detention Without Trial: Fatemeh Gholami Moghadam, aged around 40 from Fariman, has been held without trial for over two months. She was arrested in April/May and transferred to the Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad. According to information confirmed by informed sources, Ms. Gholami Moghadam's case has been referred to Branch 1 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court; nevertheless, no trial date has been set, and she remains in judicial limbo at Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad.

The ongoing arrests and heavy sentences remain a primary pillar of the suppression of women, aimed at controlling society during critical times and instilling fear to prevent another...
