Information on female political prisoners in Iran

From left, Atena Daemi, Maryam Akbari, Touran Haml Zehi, and Hajar Saeedi

Weekly report: Conditions of female political prisoners in Iran

August 19, 2020
in Women's News

This week’s report addresses the conditions of female political prisoners, including the jail sentence handed down for a women’s rights activist, the summoning and arrest of civil activists and charity workers, and dire conditions of prisoners on hunger strike.

Conditions of female political prisoners Maryam Akbari and Atena Daemi

Female political prisoners Maryam Akbari and Atena Daemi will face trial on August 31, 2020. The trial follows new cases fabricated against them during their time in jail.

The two female political prisoners are accused of “disruption of order” in Evin Prison through chanting slogans against the regime.

Maryam Akbari has been in jail for 11 years straight in a row without having a single day of leave. She was arrested on December 31, 2009 and later sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment.

Atena Daemi was sentenced to 14 years in jail by the Revolutionary Court of Tehran on May 15, 2015. The Appeals Court commuted her sentence to 7 years. But before finishing her term, she was sentenced to another 3 years and 7 months of imprisonment following a new case fabricated against her.

Five years jail sentence for a women’s rights activist

The Revolutionary Court of Sanandaj sentenced women’s rights activist Hajar Saeedi to five years of jail sentence suspended for four years. The court convened in the absence of her lawyer.

Hajar Saeedi is accused of participating in illegal gatherings and having contact with labor activists. According to the court’s verdict, she must report in to the Department of Intelligence of Sanandaj every four months.

Hajar Saeedi has been arrested on a number of occasions by security forces, the latest of which was on June 7, 2020.

Civil activist summoned and arrested for aiding people

Touran Haml Zehi, a civil activist in Baluchestan, was summoned on August 15, 2020 by the IRGC Intelligence Department. The IRGC Intelligence ordered her to report in by August 18 without mentioning the reason.

Touran Haml Zehi is a civil activist from Sistan and Baluchestan who was active in charity work, including giving assistance to impoverished families to build homes. She also worked to recruit and attract more charity workers to build several schools and help flood-stricken victims in January 2020. She is married and has several children.

Shahnaz Sadeghifar and her daughter, 17, on hunger strike

Shahnaz Sadeghifar and her 17-year-old daughter, Aynaz Zare’e, have been on hunger strike since August 13, 2020, in the Central Prison of Urmia. Their protest is to the illegal and arbitrary arrest of Aynaz and her undetermined status in prison, as well as to the heavy 15-year sentence of Shahnaz Sadeghifar.

Mrs. Sadeghifar has two mortar shrapnels in her heart because of having lived in the war zones in the Iranian Kurdistan. She needs to be immediately operated on, but she has been deprived of any medical care. She has previously had a surgery and now, her place of surgery is badly infected.

Implementing the sentence for a protester to the mandatory Hijab

Zahra Jamali, a protester against the mandatory Hijab, was arrested on August 10, 2020, after she reported in to the courthouse in Kangavar. She was transferred to the Dizelabad Prison of Kermanshah to serve her sentence of six months.

In another case, she was sentenced to 91 days in prison, 2 million tomans of fine to be paid in cash, and 548 hours to participate in classes teaching how to observe one’s chastity and Hijab.

Jamali family are very worried about their daughter’s health in prison due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. Zahra Jamali said one of the detainees in the quarantine where Zahra is being held is infected with the virus and she has been taken to a civic hospital.

Zahra Jamali and her sister, Samira Jamali, had produced a video clip in protest to the mandatory Hijab on February 27, 2020, but were subsequently arrested. The two sisters were insulted by security forces who disrespected them and used sexual slurs against them.

Fatemeh Davand: “I do not regret being in the protests”

Political prisoner Fatemeh Davand was transferred to the Central Prison of Urmia on August 6, 2020. For taking part in the November 2019 uprising, she has been sentenced to 5 years and 5 months of imprisonment and 30 lashes.

Fatemeh Davand explained in length what had happened to her during her detention. She said she had been mistreated and harassed in order to extract false confessions from her against her will. When asked to object and appeal for her verdict, she said: “I have already explained in length that these charges are false. I protested and still protest against poverty and destitution. I do not fear prison, but I’m just worried for my children. I still protest to being poor… I do not regret having taken part in the protests.”

Members of Imam Ali NGO arrested

Zahra Rahimi, general director of Imam Ali NGO was summoned to the court on August 15, 2020. A number of members of this charity group were also arrested. During the 50 days since their arrests, none of them had any legal attorneys and they had to accept the lawyers appointed by the Judiciary. The NGO’s lawyers said the arrests and detentions were politically motivated.

Situation of 5 Detained Women: One Death Sentence, Two Lengthy Prison Terms, and Limbo

August 31, 2026
Situation of 5 Detained Women: Harsh Sentences and Limbo The ongoing arrests and heavy sentences remain a primary pillar of the suppression of women, aimed at controlling society during critical times and instilling fear to prevent another uprising. In this context, fresh reports on the situation of 5 detained women reveal details regarding the prolonged detention and heavy sentences handed down by the Revolutionary Court to Leila Abolhassani, Najmeh Amini, Zahra Mousavi, Madineh Shahnavazi, and Fatemeh Gholami Moghadam in the prisons of Isfahan, Mashhad, and Kerman. The Legal Case against Leila Abolhassani on Charges of "Moharebeh" Leila Abolhassani, a 43-year-old mother of two teenage girls who was arrested during the nationwide protests in January 2026 in Shahin Shahr, Isfahan, has been sentenced to death for “enmity against God” after authorities accused her of helping set fire to a supermarket. In April 2026, Branch 5 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Vahid Hemmat-Nejad, sentenced her to death on charges of "Moharebeh" (enmity against God). Her case is now before Supreme Court, and if her appeal fails, she could be executed. During the protests on January 8, 2026, Ms. Abolhassani was near a branch of the Ofogh Kourosh supermarket chain that was on fire and began filming the scene. Security forces subsequently arrested her and accused her of having participated in setting the store alight. Those close to the 43-year-old mother firmly reject this allegation, emphasizing that she was in no way involved in starting the fire and was merely filming the incident and the burning grocery store at the time of her arrest. She has been held in Dowlatabad Prison in Isfahan ever since, and no information has been released regarding furloughs or temporary release options. Najmeh Amini, Accounting Student, Sentenced to Over 12 Years in Prison Continuing this report on the situation of 5 detained women, Najmeh Amini, a 23-year-old accounting student, has been sentenced by Branch 1 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court to 12 years, six months, and one day in prison on charges of "operational action against national security." The 23-year-old student was violently arrested and beaten by security forces on February 2 during inspections in the Ferdowsi Bazaar area of Mashhad. Following her arrest, she was transferred to Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, where she spent approximately three months in solitary confinement within the security ward. Ms. Amini is currently detained in the so-called ‘Aramesh’ ward of Vakilabad Prison. She has been deprived of basic rights since her arrest, including access to a lawyer of her choice and a fair trial, and has faced intense pressure during interrogations aimed at extracting forced confessions. Details of Zahra Mousavi's Sentence: 6.5 Years Suspended and 4 Years Imprisonment Zahra Mousavi, another detainee from the January 2026 protests, is currently serving her sentence in Vakilabad Prison, Mashhad. She was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to six and a half years of suspended imprisonment alongside four years of enforceable imprisonment. An informed source stated regarding the legal case of Zahra Mousavi: "During the preliminary investigation stage, Ms. Mousavi faced multiple charges, including participating in protests, propaganda and incitement to commit crimes, forming a group, and acting against national security." Zahra Mousavi, 21, was born in Iran and holds dual Iranian-Afghan nationality. Originally from Fariman, Razavi Khorasan Province, she worked as a cashier at a restaurant in the municipality prior to her arrest. She was arrested on January 20, 2026, and subsequently transferred to the quarantine ward of Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad. Ongoing Prolonged Detention of Madineh Shahnavazi and Fatemeh Gholami Moghadam Another section of this report examining the situation of 5 detained women concerns the continued detention without trial of two women in the prisons of Kerman and Mashhad: • Madineh Shahnavazi's 28-Month Detention Without Trial: Madineh Shahnavazi, a Sunni Muslim woman, has been held without trial in Kerman Prison for over 28 months. She was arrested by security forces in the spring of 2024 and transferred to Kerman Prison. Now, after more than two years, her case remains in the preliminary stage at the prosecutor's office, and no court hearing has yet been held to examine her charges or case. • Fatemeh Gholami Moghadam's Detention Without Trial: Fatemeh Gholami Moghadam, aged around 40 from Fariman, has been held without trial for over two months. She was arrested in April/May and transferred to the Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad. According to information confirmed by informed sources, Ms. Gholami Moghadam's case has been referred to Branch 1 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court; nevertheless, no trial date has been set, and she remains in judicial limbo at Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad.

The ongoing arrests and heavy sentences remain a primary pillar of the suppression of women, aimed at controlling society during critical times and instilling fear to prevent another...
