Active role of women continues to be evident in Iran protests including in the protests on Saturday, June 16, and Sunday, June 17, 2018.
A group of political activists, families and lawyers, many of them women, gathered in protest outside Evin Prison in Tehran on Sunday, June 17, 2018, demanding freedom of Nasrin Sotoudeh, prominent lawyer and human rights activist.
Participants in this protests were attacked and brutalized by security forces. A number of protesters including Reza Khandan, Nasrin Sotoudeh’s husband, were arrested.
In a brief telephone call from Evin on Saturday, June 16, 2018, Nasrin Sotoudeh announced that she had been incarcerated, on a temporary warrant, in the general ward of Evin for her involvement in the case of Shaparak Shajarizadeh.
In another development, Tehran University students of Social Sciences also staged a protest with active role of women on Sunday, June 17, 2018, against heavy sentences issued for students arrested during the uprising in December 2017-January 2018. They demanded that the sentences be repealed.
The students cancelled their exams and gathered on campus, holding placards urging their professors and instructors to speak out against heavy sentences for the students arrested in the uprising.
On the same day, a group of residents of Khorramshahr, in southwestern Iran, held a protest against their salty drinking water. With active role of women, the residents, gathered outside the Water Department in the city and vowed to take their protests to other government agencies if they do not receive the appropriate response.
On Saturday, June 16, 2018, passengers of the Train Station of Mahshahr expressed their protest against incompetence of officials in handling the fuel and spare parts for the trains, and the small capacity of trains, as a result of which passengers do not receive adequate services and are not able to get on the trains. Active role of women was prominent in this protest, too.
