The life of Maryam Akbari Monfared is in grave danger in Qarchak Prison, in Varamin. Insecurity and denial of medical care are putting her health and survival at severe risk.
The prominent political prisoner, now in her sixteenth year of incarceration without a single day of furlough, remains confined in Qarchak prison under conditions that endanger both her physical safety—due to the prison’s violent environment—and her health, as she is systematically denied medical treatment.
Akbari Monfared, arrested in 2009 on politically motivated charges and sentenced to a lengthy prison term, has already served her initial 15-year sentence, which officially ended in November 2024. Nevertheless, she now faces an additional two-year prison sentence as well as several new cases brought against her. These fresh charges—such as “propaganda against the state” and “insulting the Supreme Leader”—stem from her continued efforts to expose human rights violations and the inhumane conditions inside Iranian prisons.
Just last week, a violent altercation in the ward for inmates convicted of common crimes left an Afghan prisoner with a severed carotid artery, underscoring once again the absence of separation between political prisoners and those convicted of violent offenses—a constant threat to the lives of Akbari Monfared and other political detainees.
Suffering from multiple health problems—including thyroid disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, a herniated disc, and liver complications—she remains deprived of specialist medical care, a denial that could have irreversible consequences for her well-being.
